Welcome to the future of music production
So, you’ve heard it’s possible to produce release-quality electronic music entirely on your Mac or PC, and the idea has caught your imagination – but what, you’re wondering, do you need to get started? The answer, quite simply, is the computer you already own and Novation’s Launchkey.
Launchkey and its accompanying software – headlined by Ableton Live 9 Lite – give you all the tools required to learn the musical ropes and produce complete tracks in the process. We’re talking synthesisers, samplers, audio and MIDI editing, mixing, effects… oh, and one of the most powerful controller keyboards money can buy.
By investing in Launchkey and Ableton Live 9 Lite, you’re also buying into two of the most iconic brands in music technology, putting you in the illustrious company of many of today’s biggest producers and DJs.
Launchkey: the heart of your computer music studio
With Launchkey connected to your Mac or PC, making music with Ableton Live 9 Lite becomes an infinitely more tactile, hands-on experience than you’ll ever get operating it by mouse alone. And with minimal setup involved (just stick it in a USB port and you’re ready to go!), it really is as plug-and-play as it gets. Don’t let that lack of complexity fool you, though – this is a fully professional MIDI instrument that will continue to be an essential part of your setup as your skills develop far beyond the basics.
Available in 25-, 49- and 61-key versions, Launchkey’s synth-action keyboard is supremely playable, with four preset sensitivity levels for tailoring the response to your particular style. The 16 pads and numerous controls automatically reassign themselves as you navigate your Live session to suit whatever you’re doing at any given moment. For example, the sliders and knobs control mix levels and pan positions in the mixer or the parameters of the selected virtual instrument or effect; and the velocity-sensitive backlit RGB pads can be used to launch clips in the Session View or trigger percussion sounds in the Drum Rack. Meanwhile, the transport buttons (play, stop, rewind, etc) always control recording and playback.
Ableton Live 9 Lite: the real deal
The deceptively well-equipped entry-level version of one of the most popular multitrack MIDI and audio production packages in the world, Ableton Live 9 Lite offers up to eight tracks of recording and playback, deep clip editing, three sample-based virtual instruments, 11 audio and seven MIDI effects, VST and Audio Units plugin compatibility , and 600MB of bundled loops and one-shot samples. Jam freeform with MIDI and audio clips in the famous Session View and record the results into the timeline-based Arrangement View for editing, processing and mixing into a finished track. Wth its fast, fluid workflow, Live is intuitive, inspirational and fun, and when you’re ready to take things to the next level, you can upgrade to the full-on Ableton Live 9, for limitless tracks and many more instruments, effects and functional options.
