Ever wanted to play with Coldcut's toys?

As a new year gift for 2013, figurehead electronic music producers Coldcut are letting you get your hands on one of their favourite studio toys: BeatByte.

It's a slice step sequencer built in Ableton Live that works with the Novation Launchpad and lets you get creative with your loops and samples.

Designed by Coldcut, BeatByte was programmed by Joey Paranoia. Coldcut's Matt Black explains more: "The Launchpad gives a lot of creative possibilities; I've been using it for controlling Traktor, as a dub mixer and in some other odd ways. BeatByte is like an eight-track drum machine but each step of each drum can be different. There are eight channels that each use a one-bar loop sliced into eight pieces. You hit the Launchpad buttons to turn the slices on or off and each channel has an on/off button. Byte the beat!"

Here's a demo:

If you'd like to get your hands on it, simply download it here, for free, courtesy of the lovely men of Coldcut.
